UVC light between 207 and 222nm is known to effectively kill bacteria and viruses without damaging human cells. At these wavelengths, UV light is harmlessly absorbed by the outer layer of dead skin, unlike longer wavelengths which can cause severe tissue damage. Most UV sources like xenon lamps, mercury vapour lamps, deuterium arc lamps and UV LEDs emit a broader range including the longer harmful wavelengths (245-390nm).
LASER COMPONENTS offers optical short-pass, long-pass and bandpass filters from partners Omega Optical to safely block the harmful longer wavelengths while maintaining transmission of the desired 207-222nm band, making UV sources skin safe for sterilisation applications.
