SPIE announces new members

SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, has welcomed 77 new Senior Members from 22 countries. The newly recognized Senior Members hail from academia, government, and industry, working across a variety of disciplines that range from nanophotonics, biomedical photonics, Raman spectroscopy instrumentation, medical imaging, machine learning, infrared imaging, and optical devices, to optical fabrication, astronomical optics, and lithography.

This year's group of SPIE Senior Members welcomes the highest percentage of women — 27% — ever promoted. That group includes Olivia Fehlberg and Agnes Huebscher, both of Edmund Optics; the University of Auckland’s Cather Simpson; the Wyant College of Optical Sciences’ Judith Su; the University of Iowa’s Fatima Toor; the Centro de Investigaciones en Óptica’s Amalia Martínez-García; the University of Chicago's Karen Drukker; Lam Research’s Anuja De Silva; and IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center’s Luciana Meli.

SPIE is also welcoming the Society’s first SPIE Senior Member from Indonesia, Aulia Nasution, of the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember.

SPIE Senior Members are Society Members of distinction who are recognized for their professional experience and technical accomplishments, their active involvement with the optics community and with SPIE, and for significant performance that sets them apart from their peers.

“SPIE Senior Members are outstanding researchers, practitioners, and supporters of optic and photonics applications,” said 2022 Senior Member Subcommittee Chair and Clemson University Associate Professor and Associate Dean of Inclusive Excellence for Undergraduate Studies Oliver J. Myers. “Their invaluable contributions to the broad research community advances technology in ways we have not previously experienced. This honor highlights the international contributions of those in academia, industry, and government.”

The SPIE Senior Member recognition program began in 2008 as a way to recognize active Members earlier in their careers and from a broader constituency. Nominations for the 2023 cohort of SPIE Senior Members will be accepted through 15 March 2023; nomination support materials will be accepted until 1 April 2023. More information and a complete list of all SPIE Senior Members can be found here.
