Torrent Photonics Launches SpectroCam 2 Configurable Multispectral Imaging Platform

Torrent Photonics has launched SpectroCam 2™, a configurable multispectral imaging platform for proof-of-concept testing, product development, research, and OEM system development.

SpectroCam 2™ allows users to select the camera, sensor, filters, and lens for their application. Resolution, frame rate, field of view, and spectral range can be considered together instead of being limited by a fixed camera configuration.

The platform is available with sensor options spanning ultraviolet, visible and near infrared wavelengths. An eight-position rotating filter wheel uses user-swappable, high-performance hard-coated interference filters, so individual filters can be exchanged as testing requirements develop.

Organizations can use the system to evaluate candidate wavelengths, compare filter bandwidths, and refine imaging performance before finalizing an OEM design. Filters can be replaced without purchasing a new camera platform, allowing the test configuration to change as testing progresses.

“Selecting the right spectral bands is a critical part of multispectral product development,” said Hugh Garvey, Director of Imaging at Torrent Photonics. “SpectroCam 2™ allows development teams to test different sensors, filters, and optical configurations before committing to a final design. Once the configuration has been established, our team can support development of an OEM version tailored to the application.”

Customers can choose from a range of camera sensors spanning UV through NIR, allowing them to balance spectral response, resolution and frame rate for their application. SpectroCam 2™ also accepts a wide range of lenses, with a Nikon mount available off the shelf. Lens selection can be considered alongside the sensor and filter configuration during system development.

Each filter position can be specified independently, giving users control over center wavelength, bandwidth, transmission, and blocking performance. Compared with many liquid crystal tunable filter approaches, the hard-coated filter wheel can provide higher optical throughput and does not restrict every spectral band to the characteristics of a single tuning technology. The most suitable architecture will depend on the application and the number and spacing of bands required.

If a standard filter does not meet the project requirements, Torrent Photonics can design and manufacture a custom hard-coated bandpass filter using its in-house optical coating and photolithography capabilities. Filters identified during testing can then be incorporated into the final OEM design.

Torrent Photonics can also support optical and mechanical customization, systems development, assembly, and production. Customers can use the results of proof-of-concept testing to define the sensor, filters, and optics required for the final OEM design.

SpectroCam 2™ can be configured for applications including machine vision, industrial inspection, scientific imaging, agriculture, environmental sensing, forensics, security, defense, and life science research. Suitability and system specifications will depend on the target, operating conditions, and required measurement performance.

“Project requirements often change once representative samples are tested,” added Garvey. “SpectroCam 2™ makes it possible to replace individual filters or reconsider the sensor without starting again with a completely different platform.”

The portable system can be used for laboratory testing, field evaluation, or integration into larger systems. Configurable purchase packages are available, and leasing options may be offered for organizations carrying out application evaluations or proof-of-concept work.

SpectroCam 2™ replaces the original SpectroCam™ platform. The new architecture provides broader camera compatibility and greater control over sensor, filter, and lens selection during development.
