iPhysicist Miniature Lens Source iPhysicist

iPhysicist, a technological research and development (R&D) company that specialises in developing electro-optical systems, announced the development of a new miniature lens for portable devices. The lens boasts wide focus length from the visible to the near-infrared (NIR) wavelength range.

The lens was designed to provide accuracy and affordability to gesture recognition technology devices, as well as original equipment manufacturers’ (OEMs) modules that enable the operation of laptops and other portable devices, such as tablets and smart phones, by hand gestures. This is an emergent field that got a huge boost in recent years with the introduction of Microsoft Kinect. Today, there are several companies active in this field, such as EyeSight and Leap Motion.

The lens is made of only plastic elements and is ready for mass production. The lens is less than 2.7 millimetres (mm) in length. The lens consists of aspherical elements, boasting 1.6 focal length, f/2.2 and 85° field of view (FOV).

Among the other capabilities of iPhysicist, is the development of other electro-optical system for a variety of applications, such as: cell phone market (5M, 8M and 13M); gesture recognition (low f/number and wide FOV); thermal cameras (fixed, autofocus and zoom); automotive; security; medical endoscope (lens dimensions of 0.35mm × 0.8mm); and zoom lenses for conference calls. The systems are manufactured using current technology for injection moulding of plastic, moulding of glass, assembly and testing.
