NKT Photonics, developer of super-continuum white light lasers, will demonstrate a tuneable deep-ultraviolet (UV) super-continuum-powered light source at the Laser World of Photonics 2013 on 13-16 May at the Messe München (hall B1, booth 461) in Munich, Germany. The new SuperK Extend-UV wavelength extension unit provides tuneable light in the entire 270 nanometre (nm) to 400nm range with power levels on the order of 10 microwatts (µW) to 100µW. The deep-UV range is important for many applications, such as intrinsic fluorescence from proteins, for example, as well as UV-excitable probes. The collimated output enables tight focusing and the fast pulses, down to 20 picoseconds (ps) in length with variable megahertz (MHz) range repetition rate, make it suitable for lifetime measurements and studies of ultrafast photochemical processes.
The SuperK Extend-UV is a paradigm shift in UV light sources. Like large solid-state lasers, it provides tuneability and short pulses but at a fraction of the cost and with the robustness and reliability of fibre lasers. Compared to UV light-emitting diodes (LEDs), the super-continuum-powered Extend-UV provides wavelength coverage, beam quality, tuneability and pulses that are an order of magnitude shorter. To further enhance the usability of the SuperK Extend-UV, the unit features super-continuum pass-through ports enabling the user to access the entire spectrum (400nm to 2400nm) from the SuperK Extreme for other experiments. In this way, the SuperK Extend-UV can act as a hub in a multi-experiment environment, where the different parts of the spectrum are routed to the different setups through the unique SuperK Connect broadband fibre delivery system.
The SuperK Extend-UV is already being picked up by the photonics industry; Hamamatsu Photonics is integrating the system with their sub-picosecond resolution Streak cameras to create an ultra-fast fluorescence lifetime measurement setup capable of capturing time-resolved spectra with unprecedented sensitivity and speed. The combined system will be on display at Laser 2013 in the Hamamtsu booth (hall B2, booth 303). The SuperK Extend-UV will be available to new and existing SuperK customers in the fourth quarter of 2013 and will be demonstrated live at the NKT Photonics booth at Laser 2013.
