Pericom 8-channel Video Decoder

Pericom Semiconductor Corporation, a supplier of serial high-speed connectivity, signal-conditioning and timing solutions, today announced that it is launching a new integrated circuit (IC) product family of video decoders. The first new products of the family are being targeted to the rapidly growing PCIe-based digital video recorder (DVR) and video security systems used in government, military, home and business security applications.

The two products offer an advanced performance and feature set and integrate Pericom’s PCIe technology with advanced 4-channel and 8-channel video decoder functionality to handle system-monitoring requirements. The rapid growth of Web and smart phone-based monitoring is driving higher integration of surveillance systems.

Addressing a key industry benchmark, Pericom’s proprietary sync-tip detection technology can decode a signal across up to 500 metres (m) of coaxial cable for standard National Television System Committee/Phase Alternating Line (NTSC/PAL) video signals. This feature enables proper decoding even when the camera connections and cable are of poor quality, thus boosting surveillance-signal integrity and reliability. Both the 4-channel and 8-channel video decoders offer real-time video/audio decoding and can support non-real-time 8-channel and 16-channel inputs. They use 5-line adaptive comb filters for Luma-Chroma (i.e., brightness-colour) separation, resulting in quality digital video output.

Both parts offer a user-programmable inter-integrated circuit (I2C) interface, integrated automatic gain control (AGC), multiple sample rates and flexible multiplexing configurability. In addition, the 4-channel version provides stereo audio support. Both new video decoders support standard 656-format and 422-format video output signals, providing these digital outputs as general-purpose input-output (GPIO) pins to provide more application options. All these features benefit the system designer by reducing bill-of-materials (BOM) cost and board space and improving signal quality and performance. Both parts are available now.
