Point Grey, a large and innovative manufacturer of digital cameras for industrial, bioscience, traffic and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications, today announces the release of FlyCapture2 version 2.3, the next generation of its popular FlyCapture2 image acquisition and camera control library. This release continues to improve and expand Universal Serial Bus (USB) 3.0 support, introduces reduced instruction set computer (RISC) machine (ARM) support and provides greater flexibility in development environments and operating systems.
To support high data throughputs from Point Grey’s growing portfolio of USB 3.0 cameras, FlyCapture2 now leverages Direct2D technology for better image-rendering performance on Windows 7. Image tearing is eliminated and central processing unit (CPU) usage has been reduced. The USB 3.0 Pro driver is extended to provide additional diagnostics, full control of the driver stack and improved compatibility for multi-camera systems. In addition, there is richer support for third-party software utilising the DirectShow library, such as National Instruments’ LabVIEW and Mathworks’ MATLAB.
In response to growing demand for compact, mobile, low-cost yet powerful imaging systems, FlyCapture 2.3 introduces support for ARM processors. These small, low-cost, low-power processors are suitable for embedded systems such as those popular in traffic applications as well as a wide variety of mobile applications including autonomous robotics.
MultiSync, which synchronises image acquisition of multiple Point Grey cameras across separate buses, has now been expanded to support 32-bit and 64-bit Linux as well as 64-bit Windows systems.

Support for BGRU16/RGBU16 image formats
- Upgraded to Intel Integrated Performance Primitives (IPP7)
- The ability to view bandwidth usage via the user interface
- Support for Flash using DirectShow
- Support for VS2008 and VS2010 for greater flexibility and choice in development environments
The FlyCapture2 Software Development Kit (SDK) comes free with every Point Grey camera. It provides a common software interface to control all single-lens USB 3.0, Gigabit Ethernet (GigE), FireWire and USB 2.0 cameras. This complete software application programming interface (API) library includes ready-to-use demo programs and comprehensive source code designed for high performance and demanding imaging applications.
FlyCapture2 v2.3 is now available for download for all Point Grey users.
