Coherent Verdi G20 Lasers

The new Verdi G20 lasers from Coherent, Inc. offer high power from scientific-grade, 532 nanometre (nm), continuous wave (CW) green lasers. Specifically, the new Verdi G20 products deliver 20 watts (W) of low noise output, yet are identical in form and fit to earlier, lower power Verdi G products; the laser head measures 214 millimetres × 98mm × 68mm (8.43 inches × 3.86 inches × 2.68 inches). These products also deliver the same low noise, low cost of ownership, long lifetime and beam characteristics of previous models. This includes a vertically (more than 100:1) polarised output beam with M2 less than 1.1 and less than 0.02% total noise measured over a wide frequency range (10 hertz [Hz] to 100 megahertz [MHz]). The Verdi G20 products are backed by a two-year/10,000-hour warranty.

Coherent Verdi G lasers utilise Coherent’s next-generation, optically pumped semiconductor laser (OPSL) technology, which is characterised by power and wavelength scalability. Moreover, OPSL technology does not suffer from the thermal lensing issues seen in older diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) technology. This enables laser output power to be smoothly adjusted from full power down to 500 milliwatts (mW) with no effect on the output beam parameters. This is useful, for example, for both end users and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to perform downstream alignment tests at low power. The absence of “green noise” in OPSL technology enables Verdi G’s low-noise output, which is suitable for demanding applications, such as pumping carrier envelope phase (CEP) stabilised systems.

The new Verdi G20 lasers are intended primarily to pump titanium: sapphire (Ti:S) CW, mode-locked and high-repetition-rate oscillators and amplifiers. Their high power enables a single Verdi G laser to simultaneously pump both a Ti:S oscillator and a high-repetition regenerative amplifier, such as the Coherent RegA series, or to pump two Ti:S oscillators with sufficient power to each to drive a tuneable optical parametric oscillator (OPO).
