Coherent, Inc. has expanded its Obis family of plug-and-play, smart laser modules with the optional Obis Scientific Laser Remote, which provides power, display and graphical user interface (GUI) touch-screen control for up to six separate lasers in a standalone, Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH)-compliant package. (The CDRH is a division of the US Food and Drug Administration [FDA].) Moreover, each Obis Scientific Remote has a unique Internet protocol (IP) address and an Ethernet port, thus enabling an Internet-connected computer to interactively operate and control the remote from any location.
In their flexible operating mode, smart Obis laser modules bring plug-and-play simplicity to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) applications with a range of individual wavelengths between 375 nanometres (nm) and 785nm. They require a 12-volt power supply to support full functionality (including modulation), control and diagnostics in a compact package with universal serial bus (USB) computer connectivity. Currently, CDRH-compliant laboratory use is supported by an optional small keyed remote for each laser. The new Obis Scientific Remote now provides an important third option, enabling simultaneous integrated operation of up to six separate lasers without the need for separate power supplies or a computer.
The Obis Scientific Remote is a versatile interface with touch-screen operation as well as simultaneous RS-232 (i.e., the name of a series of standards for serial ports), USB and Ethernet controls. Modulation inputs for each of the six lasers and an internal power supply for all six lasers make the remote a feature-rich compact solution.
Applications for Obis span life sciences, metrology and inspection. Examples include fluorescence-based techniques, such as flow cytometry, confocal microscopy and array readers for drug discovery. Here, the wide choice of Obis wavelengths enables optimum excitation of target fluorophores (i.e., fluorescent dyes). In inspection and machine-vision applications, the user can choose the Obis wavelength to maximise contrast or other parameters.
