A new series of opto-mechanical positioners for coupling light into and out of fiber optics from Siskiyou Corporation offers a combination of high precision and full six axis adjustment in a compact package.
SMFCx products accept FC/PC, FC/APC or SMA connectorized fibers and utilize a precision aspheric lens to either focus in a collimated laser beam or collimate fiber output. Near diffraction limited focusing make SMFCx positioners useful with both single mode and multimode fibers.
The miniaturized translation stages and gimbal style mounts used in the SMFCx series deliver independent, orthogonal adjustment in all three linear dimensions as well as tip/tilt angular adjustments. The fiber itself can be rotated (the sixth adjustment axis) to control orientation when utilizing polarization preserving fibers. Traditional fiber couplers are notoriously labor-intensive to align. But the adjustment orthogonality of the SMFCx, together with the use of 100 threads per inch (TPI) actuators for submicron resolution in all dimensions, delivers the ability to achieve optimal fiber coupling efficiency with minimal effort. Locking mechanisms in all adjustments ensure that this alignment is maintained without drift over time and also do not cause any mount movement when first engaged.
SMFCx products are a compact system (2.31" x 1.8" x 1.3") that can be mounted directly to an optical table, to a mounting plate or to a laser cavity platform surface. Standard optics are available for laser wavelengths throughout the visible and near infrared. The SMFCx series products are designed for a wide range of laboratory and OEM uses in research, biotechnology, sensors and telecommunications applications.
