Mini-Diff is a three-dimensional (3D) hemispheric scatterometer introduced by French company Light Tec. It is a compact, optical system the size of a 1-litre bottle for scattering characterisation of any kinds of material and objects and measures the scattering distribution of the surface at which it is pointed, in reflection or in transmission. The system also measures bi-directional reflection distribution function (BRDF) and bi-directional transmission distribution function (BTDF).
The surface is lighted with four incident beams (0°, 20°, 40° and 60°). The measurement is done immediately in a cone of +/- 70°. Within about 1 minute, the data can be exported to any illumination design software via native format or via ASTM text format. The instrument is calibrated before the actual measurement to a calibration plate that comes with the Mini-Diff.
Possible applications include: roughness control in production; quality control of particles in semiconductor production, liquid crystal display (LCD) backlighting and reflector material characterisation for automotive headlamps and for luminaires design; and scattering of transmitting glasses.
