IXYS Corporation, an international power and integrated circuit (IC) semiconductor company, announced that its wholly owned UK subsidiary, IXYS UK Westcode Ltd., launched a 500 ampere (A), 2.5 kilovolt (kV) gate turn-off (GTO) thyristor in a new smaller package.
The new GTO thyristor rated at 500A and 2.5kV is based on IXYS UK’s established S500KC device. The die design has the same active area and performance but with an improved termination design, which allows the device to be encapsulated in a smaller 25 millimetre (mm) pole-face package. As with all IXYS UK’s small-area devices, the die uses IXYS’s proven and reliable long-finger pattern-emitter technology, which offers thermal cycling and mechanical durability. The device uses an all diffused process and is part of IXYS UK’s extensive symmetrical structured portfolio, using life-time control techniques to give optimum switching and on-state losses. The die is encapsulated in a hermetic package.
The device is available in two different voltage grades: One (S0500YC20Y) with a maximum repetitive peak forward (Vdrm) of 2000V and maximum reverse blocking voltage (Vrrm) of 100V and the other (S0500YC25Y) with a Vdrm of 2500V and Vrrm of 100V. Typical applications include traction auxiliaries plus main drives for light rail, trams and trolleybuses.
