SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, named University of Dayton electro-optics professor Qiwen Zhan a Fellow for his “significant scientific and technical contributions in the multidisciplinary fields of optics, photonics and imaging.” Only slightly more than 1000 of the society’s nearly 17,000 members (less than 6%) have become Fellows since the society’s inception in 1955.
Zhan’s work has stimulated research around the world for the creation of exotic laser shapes, including optical bubbles and needles, and laser measurement tools, according to SPIE. Zhan’s work has yielded six patents and 17 research grants. He also has published more than 70 articles in peer-reviewed journals and been invited to give more than 50 presentations.
Established in 1983, the University of Dayton is one of just a handful of electro-optics graduate programs in the nation. Seven faculty members now have the distinction of being a Fellow of the society.
