Photron, Inc., a manufacturer of high-speed cameras and image-analysis software, introduces the FastCam SA-Z high-speed imaging system featuring 21,000 frames per second (fps) at megapixel (MP) resolution. According to the company, the new SA-Z complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensor provides more than 2 million fps at reduced resolution, making it possible to view previously unseen phenomena, events and high-speed processes with image quality and clarity. The enhanced global electronic shutter operates from 1 millisecond (ms) standard down to 159 nanoseconds (ns) with export restrictions and is capable of freezing the almost any motion without blur.
Photron’s powerful high-speed imaging system offers light sensitivity and 12-bit pixel depth (analogue-to-digital converters, or ADC). Applying the reputable International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) 12232 SSAT standard, the light sensitivity measurements are ISO 25,000 for monochrome and 10,000 for colour. The camera’s 20 micrometre square (µm2) pixel format is suitable for situations where the camera needs to rotate without sacrificing image resolution. The FastCam SA-Z system includes Photron’s proprietary Photron FastCam Viewer (PFV) camera control/replay/editing software, which can also be used to rotate the image back in real-time.
The new SA-Z high-speed camera has two secure digital (SD) card slots and dual Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) ports to enable quick and easy image transfer/offload. With four onboard memory options, 8 gigabytes (GB), 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, Photron’s high-speed SA-Z camera system is suitable for ballistics, plasma and arc studies, materials science, fluidics, velocimetry, shock waves and detonics applications.
