The Jenoptik Group has acquired 92% of UK company, Vysionics Ltd. The remaining shares continue to be held by the organisation’s management team. The transaction between Jenoptik and Vysionic’s main shareholder, Lloyds Development Capital Ltd. (LDC) was completed on 14 November 2014. Both parties agreed to keep the purchase price confidential.
The UK company, which is based in Frimley, Surrey, southwest of London, currently has a workforce of 55 employees and is aiming for a revenue of around €20 million EUR for 2014, according to the company. Vysionics is a specialist in “section control” technology (i.e., average speed enforcement over a defined section of road). A further core competency of the company is Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), an essential part of many innovations within the industry.
Jenoptik section control technology is already being used in Austria, Switzerland and Kuwait. With the addition of Vysionics’ know-how and products, the technology’s application range can be expanded and leveraged internationally. In the UK, section control is also widely used on construction sites in order to provide greater safety for highway workers and drivers. Vysionics has already delivered more than 250 construction site section control systems to-date.
In the UK and elsewhere, ANPR is a major component of road traffic safety systems and general safety policy. These technologies are installed for traffic law enforcement on roads, in car parks and at railway level crossings. According to industry estimates, the worldwide market for ANPR is set to rise by 14% a year up to 2018.
As an integrated optoelectronics group, Jenoptik operates in five divisions: Lasers & Material Processing, Optical Systems, Industrial Metrology, Traffic Solutions and Defence & Civil Systems. Its customers around the world mainly include companies in the semiconductor and semiconductor equipment manufacturing industry, automotive and automotive supplier industry, medical technology, security and defence technology, as well as the aviation industry.
In the Traffic Solutions division, Jenoptik develops, manufactures and markets components and systems that increase road traffic safety throughout the world. The product portfolio, which is based on the Robot technology, includes comprehensive systems for all aspects of road traffic, such as speed and red-light monitoring systems, as well as OEM products and systems for detecting traffic violations.
In the services area, the Jenoptik division covers every aspect of the support process chain, according to the company, from system development, construction and installation of the monitoring infrastructure, to capturing images of infringements and their automatic processing, through to issuing the citations and collecting the fines as the system operator.
